Coastal Plains and Island

INTRODUCTION

Total length of coastline in India is around 7516 Km.

If we exclude to the length of coastline of islands, the length of coastline of mainland is 6100 Km.

The average width of western coastal plain is around 64 Km. Almost all rivers here forms estuary on their mouth. The number of fagoon lakes are more over here and the ports are. also more on this coast. 

The average width of the eastern coastal plain is between 120-32 Km, which has more width in the south than the north. This coastal plain has less amount of lagoon lakes the famous are Chilka and Pulicut, also has less amount of ports.

The states having coastal boundary are- Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, West Bengal, Karnataka and Goa.



Island of India

India has thousands of islands in its oo territory but only few among them has the human settlements.

Around 247 islands of India has the human Rs settlement in which 43 island are in the Arabian sea called Lakshadweep Islands and 204 are in the Bay of Bengal called Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Important Facts

The distance on the water body is measured in the nautical miles and one nautical mile is equivalent to 1800 meters. Depth in the water body is measure by the fathom and one fathom is equivalent to six feets.

According to the international recognition the boundary of any country in the water body is up to the 200 Nautical mile in which up to 20 NM is called sovereign zone and from 20 up to 200 NM it is called commercial zone.

The group of islands are also called as archipelagoes.


Lakshadweep 

It has around 43 inhabitant island which is the smallest union territory of India.

Its capital is Kavaratti, and it has only airport on Agatti  Island. 

Most of the islands are the coral atoll. Southernmost Bersivsr island is the Minicoy. 

The 9 Degree Channel is located between Minicoy and Kalpeni Islands.

Maldives is located here on 5 Degree Channel. 






Andaman and Nicobar

It has the two archipelagoes Andaman and Nicobar which are separated by the 10 Degree Channel.

 Its capital Port Blair is located on the South Andaman Island, the Cellular Jail here was famous for Kala Pani sentence.

The Andaman Island is the home to the Sentinelese Tribes who are uncontacted people.

 The highest peak of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is Mount Saddle located on the North Andaman Island.

Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island; Neil Island as Shaheed Island; and Havelock Island as Swaraj Island in 2018.

Mount Thullier is the highest peak of the Nicobar Islands located on the Great Nicobar.  India’s only active volcano is Barren Island located in the Andaman archipelago.

Narconadan Island is located in the Andaman archipelago which is the dormant volcano of India.
